If the system has stopped working, start with the repair page for that equipment: furnace, boiler, air conditioner or heat pump. If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the house and call from outside.
If it still works but is old, loud, or expensive to run, look at replacement: a gas furnace, a new boiler, central air, or a heat pump if you are coming off oil.
If everything works, seasonal tune-ups and a yearly oil burner cleaning prevent most emergency calls.

When to book each kind of service
Tune-ups are best booked before each season: heating in September and October, cooling in April and May. Replacements are easiest in the shoulder seasons, when no one is waiting in a cold or hot house.
