Steam boiler service and repair for Bridgeport radiator homes

Water hammer, spitting vents, cold radiators and low-water lockouts: we service and repair one-pipe and two-pipe steam systems the way they were designed to run.

Quick answer

Steam boiler problems in Bridgeport usually come from the water level, the air vents or the piping pitch: banging pipes, radiators that stay cold, vents spitting water, or the boiler shutting down on low water. We check the water line, low-water cutoff, pressuretrol, vents and pipe pitch, then clean, adjust or replace what is wrong.

A failed vent or wet steam.

Sight glass jumping

Oil or debris in the boiler water.

Boiler shutting off on low water

A leak, a stuck feeder or a failing cutoff.

Some radiators stay cold

Clogged vents or trapped air.

The job

How a steam system should behave

A healthy steam system heats quietly. The boiler makes steam at very low pressure, the steam pushes air out through the radiator vents, and the condensed water runs back to the boiler by gravity. When one piece is off, the symptoms are loud and obvious: hammering, hissing, gurgling or rooms that never warm.

Steam systems also have a specific weakness: they depend on piping pitched correctly and vents that open and close as designed, both of which drift over decades. We service the boiler and the system together.

Water Hammer and Banging Radiators

Banging in a steam system is water trapped where steam is trying to move, usually in a pipe or radiator that has lost its pitch back toward the boiler. It can also come from a water level set too high, or from a boiler making wet steam because of dirty water. We check radiator and pipe pitch, shim radiators so they drain, verify the water line against the boiler's marked level, and look at the near-boiler piping. Most banging can be fixed without opening walls.

Low-Water Cutoff and Auto Feeder

The low-water cutoff is the safety that shuts the burner off if the water drops too low, and it is the most important control on a steam boiler. Float-type cutoffs need regular blowdown to stay clean; probe types need periodic cleaning. An automatic water feeder can top up the boiler, but it can also hide a leak by refilling constantly. We test the cutoff, clean or replace it, and check the feeder's water use so a hidden leak does not go unnoticed.

Steam Vent and Trap Replacement

One-pipe systems rely on air vents on each radiator and on the steam mains; two-pipe systems rely on steam traps. Vents that are painted over, clogged or stuck shut leave radiators cold; vents stuck open spit water and hiss. Failed traps let steam into the return lines and cause banging. We test and replace radiator vents, main vents and traps, and choose vent sizes so the radiators farthest from the boiler heat as evenly as the closest ones. Main vents usually make the biggest difference.

Skimming and Flushing

Oil and debris on the water surface in a steam boiler make it surge and bounce, which shows up as a jumping sight glass, wet steam and banging. This is especially common after a new boiler install or a piping repair. Skimming draws the oily surface water off through a skim port, and flushing clears sediment from the bottom. It can take more than one visit on a newly installed boiler, and we show you how to read the sight glass after. See our boiler repair work for other faults.

What we see in Bridgeport homes

About two-thirds of Bridgeport's housing units are in multifamily buildings, and city planners have noted that roughly 40 percent of the housing stock predates 1940. Many of those two- and three-family houses and older apartment buildings still run on steam, often one-pipe systems installed when the buildings were new. When one boiler serves several units, a steam problem is every tenant's problem, which is why we treat those calls as priorities.

Before you call

What you can check before calling

Look at the sight glass: the water should be visible, roughly halfway up, when the boiler is cold. Make sure radiator vents are not painted over and radiators are not blocked by furniture. On a float-type low-water cutoff, the manufacturer may call for a weekly blowdown; follow its instructions carefully.

Do not add water to a hot boiler with an empty sight glass. Turn it off, let it cool and call. And never turn up the pressuretrol to fix cold radiators; steam systems heat better at lower pressure, not higher.

What drives the price

What changes the cost of steam boiler service

The fault

Adjusting a pressuretrol costs less than replacing a low-water cutoff.

Number of radiators

Replacing vents on every radiator takes time.

Two-pipe systems

Trap testing and replacement add labor.

Skimming

A new or contaminated boiler may need several sessions.

Pitch corrections

Reshimming radiators or regrading pipe.

After-hours timing

Overnight and holiday calls can carry a different visit rate.
